How do I gain experience in information technology field while working full time?

I need suggestions please on how and where I can gain experience in the information technology field while working full time in an unrelated field. I’m going to school earning my degree but I want to gain some experience under my belt before I graduate. Anything helps – voluntary, paid part time work, unpaid, evening internships.
