Information Technology?

I’m planing on doing something with information technology and i wanted to major in this field. I would just like to get some feedback on stuff i have questions on.

Does anyone know the top colleges that allow you to major in inforamtion technology? (feed back maybe by people in these schools)
Does anyone know of any other majors that would be similar and allow me to do IT stuff?
If i major in information technology what jobs are avalible for me? Avarage pay?
Should i go to school and get an associates degree or something in anything before finding a job?
Is this a hard major?
Any tips or feed back by people in this field?

Sorry to ramble on but i just want to see what im getting myself into before i end up wasting money and time and doing something i dont like and end up failing at.
